About chiropractic
Most people initially come to see a chiropractor because they have some pain or discomfort. Often this is back pain or back pain. It may be pain in the shoulder or arm. Some patients will attend because they have pain in the hip or sciatic pain down the leg. Sometimes the patient is confident that they know why the pain has come on: perhaps they have lifted something awkwardly or done an over-enthusiastic golf swing. Some patients feel that their posture is an issue, perhaps because they sit for too many hours at a desk, or in a car.
The first thing that we like to do is to have an in-depth discussion with you about your pain, but also about your medical history generally. We might find that your medical history will give us some clues about a possible cause: a history of urinary infections, or period pains might point in one direction, or a history of an accident, or sports injury might suggest other factors We will want to find out all about you, including what medications you are taking.
Next we will examine you thoroughly. We like to feel how well the spine and other joints are moving. We will do a range of orthopaedic and neurological tests to assess your mechanical and neurological state. We might do a urine test and measure your blood pressure.
At this stage we will be starting to see the full picture and will hopefully be able to explain why you are getting your symptoms. The cause of the trouble will dictate what treatment is going to help you best. Many problems have a mechanical component and will benefit from some manual therapy. This might involve a combination of massage and spinal manipulation. Some rehabilitative exercises may also be advised.
With some patients we might find issues that will benefit from medical treatment. If this is the case, we will liaise with your GP, if you are happy for us to do so.
Sometimes patients will have conditions that improve quickly (great)! Other conditions may take longer and require a few treatments. Some conditions may be on-going, perhaps due to degenerative changes, or repetitive work stresses. These patients may want to come back to their chiropractor periodically in order to stay as well as possible.
